CEC Varsity Sports Fall Recap
Boys Soccer
When head coach Mike Rigney returned to his alma mater three years ago, he set forth a goal of changing the Conwell-Egan Catholic Boys Soccer program. “We wanted to change the culture and the belief here,” said Rigney.
Following a rebuilding first season, the Eagles have responded by winning the PIAA District 12 Championship two years running, including a 2022 season with 13 victories and this past 2023 season that saw CEC win 11 games, seven in the Philadelphia Catholic League, before losing in the PCL playoffs to Archbishop Wood.
In the PIAA State Playoffs CEC lost in overtime to the defending State Champion, Northwestern Lehigh, 2-1.
The regular season was highlighted by overtime victories over eventual PCL Champion La Salle and Roman.
The Eagles were led by the play of center back Noah Kiesewetter, who earned All-PCL honors again this year as a senior for the third time and will further his education and soccer career at Holy Family University next fall. “Noah was one of our captains and was a leader, for sure,” Rigney said.
Other standout performances came from juniors Tyler Schmitt and Dylan Kopenits, who both earned All-PCL honors. Schmitt was the team’s leading scorer again this year. Liam Mullen is expected to have a standout season next year, while freshman Juan Corren was named the team’s Rookie of the Year.
“The program continues to develop, and the skill level of our players is improving each year,” Rigney added. “I feel we’ve set the groundwork for a winning culture here.”
