CEC Varsity Sports Fall Recap
Football
The 2023 fall sports season began with an historic event. For the first time in the 66-year history of the school, the Eagles played a varsity football game on campus. “It’s a dream, a godsend, that is long overdue,” said 13-year head coach Jack Techtmann. “The crowd was immense. This field gives us the environment we want. We had Alums tailgating in the parking lot so it’s great for the fans, and the ability to practice anytime with the lights is the beauty of it for the players.”
The historic home opener ended with a 47-6 CEC victory over Kensington High School.
The Eagles went on to win six games this season, four in the Philadelphia Catholic League, highlighted by defeating powers Lansdale Catholic and Archbishop Carroll, and placed third in the PCL.
On National Signing Day, five football players announced they were furthering their education and athletic careers on the college level. “My goal every year is to get as many of our players as possible to go to college for free,” Techtmann said.
Seniors Sam Cooper and Cooper Lauersen signed National Letters of Intent to attend Division I Stony Brook University. Gavin Pond will attend Millersville University, Hunter Ginsberg will attend Muhlenberg College and Tim Gipli will attend West Chester University.
Cooper earned All-State, All-Area and All-Philadelphia Catholic League honors. Lauersen earned All-Area and All-PCL honors. Pond was the Area Defensive Player of the Year while earning All-State and All-PCL honors. Ginsberg and Gipli both earned All-PCL honors.
“I think it is really great to send five of our players on to the next level,” said Techtmann, “and we have a few more who are still looking at Division III schools to play at next year. We already have six players now on the Division I level so it is nice to be able to add to that number. We have a great work ethic in the weight room that gets these guys ready.”
In addition to the five seniors, there were five underclassmen who also garnered post-season awards.
Junior Sincere Fairey was a two-way All-PCL selection and junior Honor Student Colin Walker earned first team All-PCL as a linebacker. Sophomore center Conor Horger earned first team All-PCL, sophomore guard Chase Walters was a second team All-PCL selection, and sophomore Monty Zoryea was a two-way starter as a cornerback and a running back.
“We are really proud of these student-athletes” Techtmann added. “Our coaching staff works really hard with these kids so it is nice to see that hard work paying off.”
